Don't blow the budget on just any update

Making smart decisions with money is something we all want to do. But when someone ventures into decor updates or renovations, the best choices aren't always clear. Unless you hire an interior designer, going it on your own requires an extra bit of thought. The result? A gorgeous kitchen that reflects you. Plus, you'll get the satisfaction of knowing these choices were all yours.  In Australia, the typical kitchen renovation costs around $17,000. Some areas, like Sydney, can run up to $23,000!  Updating your kitchen decor doesn't have to break the bank. Instead, opting for products worth the price in quality and staying power is key.

5 kitchen decor trends you need to avoid

Trends will always come and go. If you want to make sure that the projects you're thinking of won't end in regrets years down the line, keep reading!

Farmhouse sinks

These rustic-looking sinks were all the rage a few years ago.  Farmhouse sinks were a nice break from the norm. They added a warm touch to any kitchen that wanted to look rustic or vintage. However, if you want to make sure your kitchen updates have staying power, you may want to reconsider these sinks. 2016 is almost over, and it seems like the popularity of these sinks has sunk through the year.  It's a good thing to stick to ol' reliable sometimes. Steel sinks won't be going out of style anytime soon.

Concrete touches

The rush towards modernism hit pretty hard recently. Kitchen updates saw a lot of concrete detailing over the past few years. Concrete countertops can be a beautiful, modern finish that's likely to age better than other decor choices on this list. But if you are tackling a remodel yourself, beware.  Adding concrete counters or floors to your kitchen decor can be a nice modern touch, but you'll want to make sure it's done right. If done wrong, concrete countertops can result in you needing to replace your entire kitchen! An accident could result in cabinets, flooring, and piping being destroyed if the concrete was to spill and harden.  Huge accidents may not be likely, but it's also possible that DIY concrete-work could result in work that doesn't quite match up to your expectations!  Call in a professional if you're concerned, because concrete counters can really make or break your look and budget. If you want a safe and beautiful option, stick with classic marble.

Visible pot racks

This one was a part of the rustic trend that was popular. Everyone likes feeling at-home and cozy, but we're also moving away from things that clutter. Visible pot racks can add a charming touch, but it can quickly go from charming to cluttered. Creating more counter space and clear-sightlines are important as more and more people move towards modern styles.  Visible pot racks (and visible appliances in general) are becoming less common. Instead, this trend in kitchen decor is making way for the organized look that's likely to stick around. Skip the over-the-island pot racks and opt for creating larger and additional storage space for pots, pans, and small appliances to get tucked into.

Colourful appliances

Everyone likes putting their own touches on their home. For some, a stark, all-white look is perfect. For others, colour is the way to go!  If you are one of those people who loves splashes of colour everywhere, don't worry. You can still have your colour, but try and keep it away from your appliances. It seems like colourful appliances were a big trend in kitchen decor.  Coordinated sets of stoves, refrigerators, and dishwashers can be very cute. But they may not seem that way for very long. These colourful sets can make a kitchen seem dowdy pretty quickly. To avoid having to replace new appliances after a few years, go with stainless steel. It's a solid choice that won't date your kitchen through the years like a colour or white can.

Wood counters

Wood counters were a massive trend. Often paired with a farmhouse sink, they gave kitchens a warm feeling. It's almost as if you've stepped back through time into your grandma's kitchen with all the wood and vintage touches. But wood counters are a fading trend. Remember those houses with wood paneling and all-wood touches from the 70's?  Despite the modernized changes to cabinets and other kitchen decor items, wood countertops can very quickly age a kitchen back to that era. It goes without saying that a long-lasting choice for countertops is a more feasible option. Wooden countertops require refinishing and much upkeep to maintain that polished look. Not to mention making sure it stays sanitary!
